Some CCI-Sponsored Rooftop Gardens in St. Petersburg
Rooftop Gardening techniques are quite applicable to raised-bed gardening for
horticultural therapy. These beds were built at St. Petersburg's Prostheses
Center during the summer of 1996.
One of CCI's most innovative rooftop gardens is at the Kresty Municipal Detention
Center in St. Petersburg, where prisoners can be held for up to one year before
being charged with a crime. Prison Directors report a noticeable lowering of
tensions since these (and additional ground-level) gardens were created. Needless
to say, the ladders to access this interior rooftop are kept under tight lock
and key!
This garden is run by Alla Sokol, CCI's Rooftop Gardening Pioneer. Here, she's
working with an middle school biology class during the summer of 1996.
This is a medium-sized garden maintained by staff of the Project Institute on
Gagarin Street. Workers at the institute grow crops for themselves and their
families.
This garden is run by cafeteria workers at #4 Aerodromnaya Street. It supplies
fresh produce to the cafeteria during summer months.
